Company background

RS Connect is the largest and most established provider of insurance telematics and installations services to leading insurers and fleet management companies including the RAC and Tescobank. The firm has also made significant inroads into becoming a pan-European solutions partner with new contracts won across several major European locations over recent years.

In 2015, RS Connect secured a multi million GBP investment from Beech Tree Private Equity to fund geographic and product expansion. Beech Tree’s founders – Paul Franks and Andy Marsh – both have a strong pedigree in investing in high growth UK businesses and have a long-standing relationship with the Directorbank team.

The brief & process

The Beech Tree team required an operationally astute FD to further augment the RS Connect management team and help push domestic and global expansion across Europe and into South East Asia.

Paul Franks approached Directorbank’s Simon Thomas, aware that he already knew the RS Connect business and possessed the necessary sector and functional understanding to fulfil the role.

Simon, through his network of contacts, was referred to Sue Packer – a strong FD candidate who had recently exited a telematics business. He introduced her to Paul and, following Beech Tree and RS Connect’s assessment process, Sue successfully started as FD in May 2016.

The result

Sue has a proven track record of success in support services, contracting and manufacturing/engineering industries covering growth management, acquisition, integration and major change management.

Most recently she was Finance and Operations Director for Vodaphone Automotive UK (formerly Cobra UK) which specialises in the manufacture, distribution and servicing of telematics driven vehicle security.

Here she managed the firm’s financial and operational strategy from breakeven through four years of significant PBT growth and cash generation leading up to Vodaphone’s acquisition in 2014. She implemented two major change programmes, consolidating operations to improve efficiencies across the business, and oversaw an operational restructuring to gear the firm up for strong growth in the developing vehicle security servicing and pay as you drive insurance sectors.
