Appello works with 3 of the 4 largest housing associations in the UK, has more than 300 employees and supports over 400,000 people across its services.

The brief

Appello approached Directorbank to source a strategic, high energy CEO to lead the business through its next phase of growth, namely to build upon its leading position in the alarm and monitoring telehealth sector and drive technological development and implementation of its telecare initiatives.

The ideal candidate required significant operations experience with a strong emphasis on sales and marketing. Demonstrable experience of successfully growing a business was essential as was a proven track record of building and implementing effective KPIs and processes, engaging and motivating employees, and driving customer advocacy. Knowledge of negotiations and strategic implementation within healthcare and social care was necessary, whilst specific experience of the telecare, telehealth or healthcare IT sectors was highly desirable.

The process

We went through a comprehensive search process combining suitable targets from our network of entrepreneurial CEO/MD candidates with a detailed market mapping exercise of telecare/telehealth, social care and field service implementation businesses. The profiles of 153 high calibre individuals were then presented to the Appello/Epiris team, and after a thorough interview and assessment process four candidates reached the final stage. Tim Barclay was successfully appointed to the role.

The result

Tim is a performance-driven executive with a proven track record of delivering multi-channel customer-focussed growth strategies and implementing transformational change across organisations both large and small in regulated and unregulated environments.

Previously he was COO for BT’s Global Government and Health Division where he was responsible for its Government Framework strategy and overall business operations. Whilst here he radically transformed operations by improving governance and processes, reducing costs and enhancing training.

Prior to this, he was MD for Sales, Marketing and Customer Experience at Openreach where he was also Executive Lead for their Organisational Health Programme, a pivotal role in defining and delivering a two year action plan that delivered top quartile improvement in employee engagement and business performance. He was also Executive Lead for the London 2012 Olympics and delivered the infrastructure and engagement programmes on time and under budget.
