Sir Trevor Chinn - the role of a VC Chair

In partnership with Smedvig Capital - the London based VC firm – we bring you a 3 part video series on the role of the Chair in a VC-backed business. This film interviews Sir Trevor Chinn, a leading figure in the automotive industry and ex Chairman and CEO of Lex Vehicle leasing (now RAC).

Sir Trevor was Chairman of RAC Plc until 2003 when he retired from the board after 48 years of service. He is currently Senior Adviser to CVC Capital Partners, and was Chairman of the AA and Kwik-Fit, both former CVC portfolio companies. Sir Trevor has been on the board of three Smedvig Capital investments; ITIS, Streetcar and Tusker. He is currently Chairman of Tusker, the market leader in salary sacrifice cars.

Stewart Till - the role of a VC Chair

Stewart has held a number of roles at board level; he was Chairman and CEO of United International Pictures, and Chairman of the UK Film Council. He has held a number of senior roles at Universal, Signpost, Polygram, BSkyB and CBS/Fox. Stewart is currently CEO at Sonar Entertainment, and Chair of Icon UK, Silverfish Media and Creative Skillset. Stewart is also Chairman of Picture Production Company, an internationally renowned creative agency that specialises in film marketing, and was backed by Smedvig Capital in 2010. In 2012 Stewart joined the board of mediamorph, a leading global provider of cloud-based software and managed services to the media industry which Smedvig Capital invested in at the start of 2012.

Tom Goddard - the role of a VC Chair

Until 2007 Tom was CEO of the International Division at CBS Outdoor. Prior to this, he worked at several major UK and International Out of Home Media companies including Viacom, Metro Advertising and Maiden Outdoor. He was appointed as Chairman of Ocean Outdoor in 2009 during Smedvig Capital’s investment in the business. Ocean Outdoor is the UK leader and innovator in spectacular and iconic out of home advertising sites and was sold to LDC in May 2012. Tom is also currently Executive Deputy Chairman at AMScreen Ltd, Executive Chairman at Digicom Out of Home Digital Media Ltd, and Chairman of Marketing Force and Bravo Outdoor.

Firmly established as the authoritative analysis of directors commitments, remuneration and views on topical issues, including executive pay and gender diversity, Life in the Boardroom incorporates the opinions of 488 Chairmen and NEDs covering 1,300 appointments on main market, AIM and private company boards across all sectors. For the first time, we have also included a seperate analysis of private equity backed businesses.

The report was compiled independently by the remuneration consultants MM&K and, among other things, highlights some of the differences in remuneration levels between private equity backed boards and public companies. It also provides some interesting insight into board effectiveness across different types of businesses.
 
Restoring the Markets in a Financial Crisis – Capital Markets Report 2012
A critical appraisal that explores and confronts the difficult and persistent issues surrounding the public routes to corporate capital. In particular the areas covered within the report include: fitness for purpose of the IPO model, the features of governance which really matter to investors and the markets, and the challenges to the London markets in maintaining continued global relevance - all against the backdrop of an enduring economic low.

The survey and publication of the report was conducted by our sister company Hanson Green in partnership with DLA Piper, the global law practice. An advisory committee of senior figures from Deutsche Bank, Schroders, PriceWaterhouseCoopers and The London Stock Exchange was also engaged to provide valuable direction and guidance.
