Private Equity investors are demanding more from their chairmen. But how do they find the non-execs who can give them the competitive edge?
Jonathan Hick of executive search agency Directorbank highlights the key issues you need to assess when hunting for the best non-execs.
- Do they have private equity experience? Have they successfully chaired a VC/private equity-backed business - or been an executive in such a business - and seen a successful exit?
- What useful sector experience, contacts and/or other experience do they offer that will complement the executive team?
- Will they command the respect of management and the investors and be a fair arbiter between them?
- Will they have the tenacity to help drive the company forward in line with the business plan and numbers each month, not allowing slippage?
- Do they have a track record of making and carrying tough decisions where necessary?
- Do they have the capability to step into the chief executive's shoes in an emergency?
- Do they have the capacity to do this job properly?
- Can you see a buzz about this person? Are they keen to get involved in the company you're recruiting for?
- What is their motivation? Is it just financial?
- What do the referees say?
